Wilderness Wonderland

28 th April 2007

Over 1,100 Cygnets, Briginí, Guides, Rangers and Guiders invaded Dublin Zoo on Saturday 28th of April.  They came from the Dioceses of Clogher, Cork & Ross, Derry & Raphoe, Down & Connor, Dublin, Ferns and Kilmore.  After registration each section went their separate ways.

The Cygnets went around the Zoo singing and dancing away as they saw all the          animals before making their way to the green for lunch. After lunch they had their faces painted before going to meet their keeper at the city farm.

The Briginí divided into teams and made their way around the zoo by solving clues.  After handing in their answers lunch was eaten sitting in the glorious sun!  Fed and watered they made their way to meet their keeper at the snow leopard.  Having learnt all about the snow leopard they then explored the rest of the zoo during their free time.

The Guides also divided into teams and did a treasure hunt, the answers of which led them to solving an anagram of their adopted animal’s name.  Once this was completed they also joined the rest of the sections for lunch on the green.  Their Meet The Keeper took them into the African Plains to meet the Rhino!  After a          fascinating talk where they learnt all about the rhino and the “save the rhino fund” they also had free time to explore.

The Rangers treasure hunt involved taking photographs as well as solving clues.  Some funny pictures were received!  After a leisurely lunch in the sun they went to see the penguins being fed.  Rangers from Clonard who had won a competition were lucky enough to be able to get into the enclosure and feed some of the               penguins.

At 4.00pm everyone assembled on the green for a group photograph and prize  giving.  Congratulations to all the prize winners (details of which are to be found in this issue of Guiders Link). The prizes were awarded by our                             Chief Commissioner Carol Ewings.

Each of the sections also adopted an animal on the day;

Cygnets adopted a Elephant

Briginí adopted a Snow Leopard

Guides and Rangers adopted a Rhino

Contributions were also brought for the Save the Rhino Fund which were handed over at the prize giving.

Everyone went home with Wilderness Wonderland bag and badge, a gift and a zoo badge.  The gifts for Cygnets were colouring pencils, Briginí got rulers while Guides and Rangers   received a water bottle.  All of the gifts were branded with our name and logo.
