Ranger Outdoor Day

June 2009

WHAT EVERYONE GOT UP TO...

On Saturday, 6th June, 11 Rangers from Down & Connor, Cork, Wexford and Cathedral Area came together for a day of Sailing and Windsurfing in Carlingford Adventure Centre. Unfortunately, the weather decided to make things a little more difficult for us. We were unable to go Sailing and Windsurfing, so instead we undertook the high rope challenge and participated in Carlingford’s own Crystal Maze.  A great day was had by all even if we did end up a little wet (Ok, maybe we ended up very wetJ)

Michelle from Wexford has given her account of the day below.

The day was a wet and miserable one but we stuck it out and good fun was had by all.

We started off with the instructor walking us to the nearby field where the high ropes and wire crossing were set up. It was a good walk and along the way, everyone found out something new about all the people there. No one really knew anyone from previous activities.

When we arrived in the area where the high rope crossing took place, we got kitted out in harnesses and helmets for our safety.

We took it in turns to complete the obstacle which involved climbing a ladder, walking across a straight pole, climbing up a pole and then going diagonally across another pole and then we had to continue to climb further up a pole then finally across a narrow wire hanging on to ropes hanging from above!

I was very afraid and didn’t make it far but many of the girls fully completed the course and enjoyed it despite the weather! One of the girls from the North was celebrating her birthday and as a special present she completed the course blindfolded! She said afterwards that it was much easier because she had no idea of how high up she was.

After Lunch, we were supposed to do some water sports but due to the awful weather that was not able to happen, instead we did team challenges. We all worked well as a team to win gems. The team challenges included a spider’s web, a maze, a giant’s thumb, building a pyramid, an obstacle course and crossing a pole over a pit of water. We all completed the tasks the best we could and despite the weather we all had a good day.

Thanks a million to Yvonne and the Ranger Team for arranging the day and the staff at Carlingford Lough for such a great day and to all the leaders who made it possible for us to go.
