CGI's CHOSEN CHARITIES...

Kwa-Thema Stimulation Centre SOUTH AFRICA

The Kwa-Thema charity is run by a South African Girl kwa themaGuide Leader called Miriam. The aim of the centre is to take in severely disabled children and use different methods to stimulate them and help them react to the world around them. Miriam also teaches the parents how to continue to work with
the children in their own homes. Unfortunately, disabled children in South Africa are not treated as well as we would kwa themaexpect. Miriam depends totally on volunteers and donations - there is no official government support. The centre currently consists of rundown prefabs, with very little equipment available. Miriam has plans for a brand new building to be built - she has acquired the land and has been fundraising since 1993 to make it a reality. Dolores Farnan is coordinating any funds that members of CGI can give.

An ALARMING number of children amongst the urban poor still remain without an opportunity to receive formalSchool-on-Wheels: The School-on-Wheels project is the flagship of Doorstep's attempts to take education to Out-of-School children who dwell on the very fringes of society. Study Classes: The dropout rate of children enrolled in Municipal Schools is a cause of concern in the battle against illiteracy. A majority of these children are first generation learners with little or no support at home. Study classes run by us offer door step schoolstudents in class I-IV extra tuition and help in order to cope with school. Balwadi (Kindergarden): Balwadis were started in the community at the behest of community members. On Door Step School's part this was an excellent opportunity to catch kids at a young age and get them hooked on to learning, which can be fun. Out-Of-School Programs: Children that are not enrolled in school require usto come up with the most flexible and innovative programs. Weidentify communities, like migrant workers' door step schoolchildren, street children, fishermens' children etc, and try to establish classes as quickly for them. The aim is to get them to the level where they can enroll in regular school. Our Moto... Where there is a hut, there will be a pre-school; Where there is a child, there will be education; Education moves on to every doorstep. Our mission is to bridge this divide, Using innovative programs that will bring education
