Brigín Environment Day

11.00 a.m saw 200 Briginí and Guiders assembled in Larch Hill ready for the Opening Ceremony to commence. The ceremony, which was introduced by Catherine Lenihan, National Commissioner for Brigín Section, was performed by Dale Treadwell of Naturally Wild. Dale first gave the girls a talk on the importance of trees, after which 2 Briginí from each company completed the planting of their tree. In all 15 trees were planted, Chestnut, Mountain Ash, Spanish, Chestnut and Beech. The trees were kindly donated by Coillte. The girls divided into four groups and made their way around the various workshops, two before lunch and two after lunch.

The workshops :
Basic Plant ID: The girls were told about plant lifecycle and were then shown some insects including a live cricket which they were allowed to handle. Some did and some ran a mile! The session ended with the girls learning how to identify trees using basic keys.

Craft: This session consist of colouring and building 3-D pictures of a lion on a wall tile. The girls were also given a Certificate for participation in the day which they filled in and coloured. They were also given outline butterflies, wool and paper for cutting into petals, to be made up into mobiles.

Trash Workshop: This involved interactive story telling about recycling. The girls finished the session by planting seeds in biodegradable flower pots which they then brought home to plant out in the garden and look after.

Games: This group were again split in two, with half going on the bouncing castles and the other half playing games with a recycling theme and then changing over after half an hour.

4.00 p.m. saw everyone coming back together again for the Closing Ceremony.
Doloras Farnan, Assistant Chief Commissioner, spoke to the girls and taught them a newsong. The prize giving was then performed by Cecilia Browne, National Treasurer.
