An account of what really happened on the Canoe Day by Rangers from

Diocese of Cork and Rossy

" On Saturday morning the 9th of June we all arrived in Dublin not sure what to expect from the day. We all got suited and booted and waited for our instructions. We were told how to get out of a kayak if one of us was unfortunate enough to fall out. We were all confident we could stay in the kayak that was until we got pushed into the water we soon realise that staying in wasn’t going to be as easy as we thought. Falling out was fun but for future reference don’t drink the Liffey I learnt that the hard way!!!
We played games such as chasing but this game of chasing meant that we had to throw wet sponges at each other and believe me it sounds really easy but when you are in a kayak its not very easy as it sounds you have to try and keep yourself in one place long enough so that you can hit another guide with the sponge.
Besides playing games we learnt the basics about how to manoeuvre and basically how to use a kayak which was just as fun as playing games. At the end of the day we all had a test , well it was really just turning yourself over and getting out and banging the top of the kayak three times. (to show that you could capsize without panicking)
By the end of the day everyone knew the basics about kayaking and we were all glad we went. It was a great day. It was full of games and laughter and getting to know guides and leaders from Wexford, Cork and Dublin. The fun we had will always be remembered by all who where there for the day. On behalf of all the Rangers that went for the day I would like to thank those who organised the event”

Before...

and After!

A weekend course will be run in May 2008.

This weekend is for anyone who has completed the level 1 cert and for those who have at least been in a canoe before

To help us organise instructors it would be of great help if you could let us know if your Rangers are interested in attending.
